Message Received: News Still Comes With a Human Touch

Published: October 29, 2025

Hi Friends,

Friendly reminder: Daylight Savings Time is ending this Sunday. Fall back, enjoy an extra hour of rest (unless you’re a parent), and mentally prepare for evenings that sneak up on you faster than your to-do list.

The News Isn’t Coming from ChatGPT…Yet

Despite all the hype, most Americans aren’t getting their news from AI chatbots. A recent Pew Research study found that only 2% of adults use chatbots like ChatGPT for news often, 7% sometimes, and 75% never do. Fewer than 1% actually prefer chatbots over traditional sources. Among those who give chatbots a try, nearly half find the news it provides inaccurate, and a third struggle to tell fact from fiction from the information they receive.

Key takeaways:

  • Chatbots may be flashy, but for now, Americans prefer their news the old-fashioned way: delivered by real people and trusted sources.
  • Traditional news outlets are still the most trusted by Americans, which means investing in earned media still has value for your organization.
  • Keep your facts tight, your messaging clear, and treat AI tools as a supplement, not a source.
Reddit: The New Focus Group (for Humans and AI)

Reddit isn’t just an online forum anymore. It’s where brand perception gets built in real time. With deals placing its content inside Google, OpenAI, and other AI tools, what’s said on Reddit now shows up in search results and chatbot answers everywhere. So, your brand’s rep is literally shaped by those Reddit threads.

Why it matters:

  • More than 110 million people use Reddit daily, and features like Reddit Answers already attract 6 million weekly users.
  • It’s also one of the most cited sources by AI, proving that both people and machines are paying attention.

Takeaway for communicators:

  • If you want your brand’s story told right, don’t just lurk, you need to join the conversation.
  • Authentic engagement in niche communities can shape how humans and AI alike understand your brand.

Key takeaway:

Reddit is where public opinion and algorithms meet. If your brand isn’t part of the thread, it’s part of the rumor.

MAGA’s Boycott Blitz: Culture Wars Go Corporate

Conservative activists are turning cancel culture on its head, targeting brands they see as too liberal. Disney, Netflix, and even the NFL are feeling the heat as politics and pop culture collide.

What we’re seeing:

  • Netflix faced renewed backlash over LGBTQ+ characters in kids’ shows like Cocomelon and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.
  • The NFL caught heat for booking Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl halftime act. Apparently singing in Spanish now counts as a political position.
  • And, let’s not forget progressives: Disney saw U.S. streaming cancellations more than double in September after “pausing” host Jimmy Kimmel due to political pressure. Roughly 3 million Americans canceled Disney+ and 4.1 million canceled Hulu.

The bigger picture:

  • Boycotts rarely last long, but they show how consumer choices are now political statements (and a PR headache).
  • Companies are learning that a single moment, joke, or casting decision can spark a widespread movement.
  • While many brands rebound fast (Disney still ultimately gained new subscribers), the reputational risk lingers far longer online.

Key takeaways:

  • Culture wars are now part of brand management.
  • Stay authentic, monitor sentiment closely, and remember that sometimes silence sends the loudest message.
Heartening Efforts, Frustrating Circumstances

It’s truly heartening to see private companies and organizations stepping up during the government shutdown. DoorDash is delivering free meals to SNAP recipients, the World Central Kitchen is providing meals to furloughed federal workers, H-E-B has donated millions to local food banks, and countless others are providing additional resources to their local communities.

These acts of kindness are making a real difference for those facing food insecurity, but they also bring attention to a difficult truth: we shouldn’t have to rely on nonprofits and private companies to meet our citizens’ basic needs. It’s time for our elected leaders to come together and find a path forward. The need for a solution is urgent, so families, seniors, and others who are vulnerable don’t have to depend on temporary relief measures.

If you know anyone affected by the potential loss of SNAP or WIC benefits due to the government shutdown and in need of groceries, there is a little-known resource that can help provide free food each month. More information can be found here.
