Recess is over. Lawmakers are back in session, parents are back in carpools, and comms teams need to show their work.
Here’s your syllabus for the week ahead.
Parents Still Back Teachers, But Doubt the System
According to EdChoice’s latest summer polling, optimism in K–12 education has slipped since spring. Half of parents still think their local district is on the right track, but that confidence drops to 44% at the state level and just 37% nationally. Across the board, sentiment is down a few points from March.
This writer believes we’ll see drops in enrollment numbers again this year - and public schools need more funding and more marketing help than ever before.
Parents aren’t turning away from the system, they’re looking higher up the ladder. Large majorities believe the federal government should play a leading role in funding low-income schools (67%), supporting special education (65%), ensuring equal opportunity (63%), enforcing accountability (60%), and protecting civil rights (60%).
Key Takeaway: With just half of parents confident in local schools, demand is growing for stronger systemic support.
Paging Dr. TikTok: The New Public Health Authority
As students head back to classrooms, healthcare messaging is facing a test of its own, and one it’s struggling to pass. Trust in traditional health info is slipping, while conspiracy theories and misinformation are showing up in the halls and online.
Recent flashpoints:
- TikTok “health hacks” with zero science are outpacing CDC content.
- Politicians now cite influencers over epidemiologists.
- Hospital systems are hiring influencer relations teams.
For communicators:
- Ditch the jargon, clarity is trust.
- Recruit trusted messengers before a crisis hits.
- Watch for emerging topics online, as niche ideas often go viral.
Influencer > Institution? Trust Is Getting Personal
Trust is shifting from bylines to feeds. According to Pew, 41% of U.S. adults now trust social media for news, that’s up from 34% in 2016. The rise of “near-news” influencers (think: Hank Green, Jessica Valenti, Hasan Piker) means people aren’t just reading the news, they’re watching it get interpreted.
What’s changing:
- Personality beats pedigree.
- Headlines come with hot takes.
- Journalism and commentary? Basically roommates.
For communicators:
- Repackage the win, don’t just reshare it. Make coverage work across channels and audiences.
- Feed the messengers, not just the media. Give influencers and explainers material they can carry.
- Fact-check the remix, not just the original. Track how your story gets clipped and reframed.
- Lead with explainers, especially on nuance. Simplify complexity so amplification stays accurate.
Turning Tragedy into Change
Last week, we helped the Raine family tell the devastating story of how ChatGPT step-by-step coached their 16-year-old son Adam to suicide earlier this year.
Working alongside the Raine family, Edelson PC, Tech Justice Law Project and the Center for Humane Technology, we developed a communications approach to ensure Adam's story reached the widest possible audience and demanded accountability from OpenAI.
The story broke with exclusives in the New York Times and with NBC News and subsequently led to nearly 100 pieces of earned coverage within the first five days of the case being filed.
The case and coverage led OpenAI to issue a series of defensive public statements effectively admitting that ChatGPT — used by hundreds of millions weekly — is unsafe for people in crisis.
Share Your Wisdom
We’re back to teaching Intro to PR + Advertising at USC again. If you could put one sticky note of advice on every student’s laptop before they ever interned… what would it say?
(Bonus points if it’s something you wish someone told you before your first job.)
